Out of the Darkness and Into the Light

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. ~Genesis 1:3-4

Gray skies, cold weather, the turning of clocks back and shorter daylight hours are all characteristic of winter and its abounding negativity. Just the mere thought of darkness, frigid temps, and subsequent inactivity can lead someone to feel depressed, alone, and anxious. We start to feel this way as soon as the clocks are turned back. It’s like a switch goes off in our brain and without even thinking, we have this dread of the upcoming months. We have already succumbed to the feeling of desperation, depression, sadness and blah.

Most of us need light. We thrive on it. We embrace the sunshine, the natural injection of Vitamin D, the spiritual uplifting we feel when the sun is shining and the grass is green, flowers are sprouting, and the trees are abundantly blooming with life. We feel as if we can do anything, be anyone, go anywhere. We are empowered to be all that we can be. We feel strong and vibrant, full of life.

What makes this change in the season affect us so much? Why do the winter months and all of its “faults” have to be so tough on us? Why does the shortened days disable us? How do we combat these feelings so that we can get through this difficult period of time?

Unfortunately, for many, this is a problem, and it interferes with daily existence. It exists in the form of S.A.D., seasonal affective disorder and it is very real. It brings on feelings of sadness, isolation, in some cases, weight gain, a change in appetite, insomnia and a host of other conditions as well. But there are ways to cope with it and with practice, determination, and a good outlook and attitude, one can begin to fight their way through this period of time and find joy.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. ~Psalms 143:8 NIV

Here are 10 simple things you can do to help combat these feelings:

1. Surround yourself with friends and loved ones to help boost your attitude, and feelings of isolation.

2. Take up a hobby such as painting, drawing, woodworking. Listen to music.

3. Read a good book that interests you.

4. Watch uplifting movies/TV shows/comedies.

5. Exercise. Even light exercise can help your mood change from negative to positive.

6. Experiment with light therapy. There are artificial light therapy lamps that will help to enhance your mood.

7. Get outdoors even for a few minutes multiple times a day to get some sunlight on your face and body. Soak up the sun light waves as much as you can.

8. Go for a brisk walk during the daylight hours.

9. Listen to inspirational talks/webinars/podcasts.

10.Meditate and/or pray.

For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

It’s okay to feel this way. Understand it, acknowledge it, and accept it, but don’t let it dictate your life or take away your joy. Lean on God to show you the way during these difficult days. Life is about living to its fullness embracing all that we have been blessed with. God promises us light, love, joy, peace, and happiness. Be grateful for all that has been bestowed upon you. God walks along side of you even through the darkness.

Power of Community

The Power Of Community

As I sit in a group therapy and look around me, I realize how blessed I am that I have this community of individuals that listen, understand, and connect with one another. It is a safe place to retreat to when the week has been hard, unmanageable, or discouraging, or even joyful, uplifting, and promising. This is a place where individuals come together to share, to encourage, and fellowship with one another. It is a place where tears are shed, words are spoken, hugs are rampant, and judging doesn’t exist. It is 90 minutes of healing, giving and receiving support, and where gratitude is abundant. Scripture says we are better together than alone (Romans 12:4-5) and so community exists.

Community is God’s desire for us. God didn’t intend for us to live in isolation. His design and purpose for us was to thrive in and form relationships with others. To experience life with others, the good days and the bad days, helps us to be better people for ourselves and for others. Some people think going along in life is easier led in solitude, but that is far from the truth. Being in a community is important for our overall inner peace, happiness and growth. Having relationships allows others to pray for you, to care for you, to share with you, and to serve alongside of you.

“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24–25 NIV

My journey in group has taught me to trust and embrace others, to have faith in others, to listen intently and learn from others, and to love others from all walks of life. It doesn’t matter where you are from, what you have, or what you don’t have, or what your life was like before or even what it is like now. We all want the same thing. We all want community. God wants us to live life with others.

Jesus said, Love each other as I have loved you - John 15:12-13 NIV. We are asked to love one another in a way that mimics that of Jesus Christ. We are imperfect beings; we need to build each other up. The most important commandment Jesus gave us is to love God and love others (Matthew 22:34-40). Healthy relationships are important, and God commanded that we treat others well. God encourages us to take care of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Maintaining the connection with each other and focusing on building a community of love in word and actions is God’s ask of us.

As I listen week after week to what my fellow group members want to walk away with, there is one thing that continues to stand out. Community. Why is it so important to us? Because it is important to God. God loves people and he knows that people need people. For that matter, the gospel and all of Scripture, reinforces the truth that we were created for community.

Has God Opened Your Door?

Have You Opened the Door for God?


I once considered myself someone who prayed, but not all the time, and maybe not fervently, and maybe only when things didn’t always go as planned.  But isn’t it true that God says for everyone who asks, seeks, and knocks, the door will be opened, and your prayer answered?  I thought that was all I had to do.  Does that sound familiar?  Is that how you attempt prayer and your communion with God?

For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. ~Luke 11:10 (NIV)


I always felt confident that God heard my prayers, but I wasn’t always sure he would answer them.  Luke 11:10 says, “For everyone who asks, receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” So, why weren’t my prayers answered. I asked. Why wasn’t I receiving?  Oh, there’s more to the verse.  Was I seeking God?  Did I knock?  Was the door opened?  And when the answer was no to all those questions, I had to ask myself why.

I had to ask myself, was I really seeking God?  Was I reading God’s word daily? Was I being renewed and strengthened by his Word and his promises? Was I willing to wait for God’s timing?  Was I asking for something because I thought it was right for me without going to God in prayer?  God will open doors, but he will also keep doors shut if they are not the right doors.  

I realized I could not just ask for something, sit back, and expect to have it all fall into place. I need to be fervent in prayer, approach with the right heart, and wait for God’s timing. God will open the door at the right time, with the right attitude, and being mindful of what God asks of me as well. I have shut the door on God many times and when that happened, nothing good came of it. When I let God in, when I have opened the door, I always see small and significant changes, things that only God could orchestrate. That’s when I know God is working in my life.

To open the door for God means letting God in and trusting Him in every area of my life; having faith and confidence that God will provide only what is best for me in all things but also understanding not all doors will be opened.  Not all requests will be answered, but in seeking God with continued and fervent prayer, allows God to work in my life and provide all things that I have been looking for, waiting for, and asking for. 

I have asked God to enter my heart, I have sought and found His unending and enduring love. I have knocked on the door of God’s house. He has opened His door so that I may have increased faith in Him and my relationship will be forever strengthened.
